The impetus of the neonatal screening / EHDI programs has pushed
forward the development of other technologies not based on information
from the Auditory Periphery. The pages of this section are intended
to describe laconically these new technologies. As time passes by
and more studies are being published (mainly for the ASSR
section) we will new and relevant information.
In these pages you can find information on the following arguments:
Auditory Steady State Responses
Automated ABR
- The ABR technology appeared before the
OAE testing in the field of hearing screening,
but it was compromised by the long time requirements of each ABR
recording. In the last 10 -15 years, numerous proposals have appeared
in the literature presenting automated versions
of the traditional ABR testing procedures (AABR). Lately fourth
generation OAE equipment incorporate AABR modules, thus both technologies
are being developed in parallel . It should noted though, that
due to improvements in the AABR algorithms the time differences
between AABR and OAE testing are significantly decreasing. The
AABR provides better information about the hearing threshold (peripheral
+ central components of the auditory system), but requires better
ambient acoustics and relaxed / immobilized infants.
The basic information on AABR can be found here.
